Older Baby Chicks

Salmon Faverolle Pullets

The chicks are almost 5 weeks old and the weather is mild, so the coop door is open. I was wondering what the older chickens would do when they saw the chicks, but they don't seem to mind them too much.

The chicks are inside a smaller pen and the older chickens are in a larger pen area that surrounds the chicks' pen. I hope that they will get know each other before I let the little guys into the larger pen. I won't be doing that for awhile yet.

It's warmer now and the heat lamp is off at night. When we went down to close them up, they were huddled up outside where it was still somewhat light. I forgot to plug in the nightlight. A light sensor nightlight is the handiest thing. Chickens can't see in the dark and these guys didn't know enough to come in before it got too dark to see.

This is the age that you can start to tell the difference between the males and females. The males tend to feather out slower, have longer legs, and their combs and wattles are starting to grow faster and larger than the females.
